Pavers are wonderful accents to any landscape. They create beautiful walkways, custom patios and much more. Pavers increase property value and curb appeal as well. For the most part, they require little maintenance. However, sealing pavers should be considered an essential part of protecting your investment.
Why Should I Seal?
Sealants provide three important things for your pavers: prevention, preservation and protection. When you seal your pavers, it helps to prevent organic growth from occurring. Plants, like grass, weeds or moss, can grow between the paver joints. Sealing them helps to prevent water from seeping into the ground between pavers and, thus, starve these organics before they can damage your pavers. It also helps to prevent insects from establishing homes between or beneath your pavers. Both organic matter and insects can destroy the foundation your pavers sit on and create uneven surfaces or cracks. Sealing also helps to preserve your pavers. Sealants help to water-proof your pavers. Not only does this help stop water damage, but it reduces the likelihood of stains from oil and grease as well. Sealing preserves the color, texture and value of your investment. It prevents dirt from penetrating small crevices and makes routing cleaning maintenance much easier. Because of this, it also helps to protect your pavers from costly repairs. Pavers will deteriorate over time. However, by preventing damages and preserving their surface integrity, sealing them will help protect them and slow this.
How Often Should I Seal?
There are many different types of sealant on the market. As a general rule of thumb, water-based sealants should be reapplied every 3 to 5 years. Acrylic sealants should undergo resealing every 2 to 3 years. Use and the environment will greatly affect how often you need to reseal your pavers. Check the manufacturer’s directions for your specific pavers to ensure you use the correct type of sealant.
How Do I Know When to Seal?
Determining if your pavers need to be resealed is easy. Simple spray or pour water onto your paver surface. If the sealant is still working, the water will bead on top of the pavers. If they absorb the water, it is time to apply a new coat of sealant. (When it comes time to reseal your pavers, be sure to check on your joint fillers. If you notice your filler is low or cracked, apply more before sealing your pavers to ensure your seal coat protects it as well!)
