Pavers are often used in landscape design. Modern and older homes alike share in the use of pavers. However, older or historic homes need to be particularly observant of maintenance. Because their pavers are older, they have already surpassed the “new paver” grace period. Making cleaning and care a priority for your pavers can ensure they remain safe and functional for years to come.
- Routine Cleaning:
Making a habit of cleaning your pavers can help prevent problems further down the road. Dirt, chemical spills, and mold can cause discoloration and damage. Sweeping can remove surface debris easily and quickly. Absorbent products, such as kitty litter or chemical agents, can help clean up oils or other liquids.
- Long Term Care:
Power washing and sealing pavers will ensure long, beautiful use. Both can be done on your own, but a professional landscape contractor may be a wise investment here. Power washing will ensure a deep cleaning of the pavers and their fillers. (Be careful: using excessive pressure can damage the pavers or filler. A professional should replace filler as they work.) Apply a sealant shortly after deep cleaning your pavers. Be sure to remove old and uneven layers from previous sealants prior to applying a new coat. Sealant prevents weeds, weather and stains from damaging your pavers.
- Repairs:
Accidents and eventual age will cause damage to your pavers. Improper installation or repairs can also increase the likelihood of further damages. Repairs may be isolated to one particular area. They also may be an indication of a much larger problem. As with deep cleaning and sealing, repairs may be best left to professionals. They can help determine the root cause of the issue. This can include a poorly constructed base layer, rock salt used for de-icing, or improper cleaning.
- Notes:
Never use sand blasters and muriatic acid on pavers. Both damage the surface layer. Sandblasting harms the integrity of pavers, causing pits and cracking to occur. Muriatic acid discolors them.
Rock salt is often used to remove ice during the winter. While this will not destroy your pavers, be sure to clean and seal your pavers annually. After a couple years of repeated use, the rock salt can crack or scale your pavers.
Proper paver maintenance is essential in protecting your investment. Keeping them free of dirt and debris regularly can reduce the need for deep cleaning. However, an annual power washing and sealant application can keep your pavers beautifully maintained. Addressing damages as they occur can prevent a small problem from turning into a much more expensive issue.
